In short
- Get the stages right first. Path shows the stages your Sales Process gives each record type.
- Create one path per record type, on the Stage field.
- Give each stage its key fields and short guidance for success.
- Path shows what to do. Validation rules make sure it gets done.
What opportunity path in Salesforce does
Path is the row of stages at the top of the record. Click a stage and it opens a panel with the key fields for that stage and guidance on what to do. Reps can mark the stage complete from the path.
It works on Leads (on Lead Status) and other objects too, but the opportunity path is where it earns its place.
1. Get the stages right first
Path shows the stage values the record type's Sales Process includes. If the stages are unclear, the path will be too. Rename stages to what happened, add the ones you need, and give the closed stages clear names.
2. Implementing opportunity path in Salesforce, step by step
Enable Path
In Setup, open Path Settings and enable it. Turn on remembering user preferences, so the panel stays open or closed the way each rep left it.
Create the path
Click New Path. Pick Opportunity, the record type and the Stage field.
Add key fields
For each stage, pick up to five key fields the rep should fill at that step.
Write guidance for success
For each stage, write short guidance: what to check, what to ask, what to send. Links to templates or scripts work well here.
Add celebrations
Pick the stage that gets confetti, like Closed Won, and whether it shows every time.
Activate
Activate the path, then check that the Path component is on the opportunity Lightning record page.
Repeat for each opportunity record type. Each one can have its own fields and guidance.

3. Back the path with stage rules
Key fields show what to fill. They do not force it. Add validation rules for the fields that cannot be skipped.
- Require fields before a deal enters a stage, like a target date at a scheduled stage.
- Require a reason when a deal is closed lost.
- Block jumps that skip a required stage, if your process needs it.
Use the same rules on the lead path: require an unqualified reason when Lead Status is set to unqualified.
4. Go past the standard path
Salesforce can be changed in any way. Where the standard path stops, a Lightning Web Component can take over.
- A banner on the opportunity when it reaches a set stage, like a green banner when the deal is won.
- A key fields section at the top of the layout, next to the path.
- Flows that run when the stage changes: tasks, emails and alerts.
Where to start
Ask your best rep what they check at each stage. That is your guidance and your key fields. Build it for one record type, get feedback, then roll it out.
