In short
- List email opens are not on each recipient's activity timeline. They show in the HTML Email Status report.
- Enhanced Email has to be on, and the recipient has to be a lead, contact or person account.
- Pixel-based opens are imprecise: image blocking and mail scanners skew them.
- For automation on opens and clicks, connect an email platform to Salesforce.
Where Salesforce list email open tracking shows up
Salesforce shows tracking for list email in one place: the HTML Email Status report. That is where you see which list emails were opened.
It does not show on the activity timeline the way a single email can. That is why opening a contact after a list email send looks like nothing happened.
Why some list emails show as not tracked
- Enhanced Email is off. Lightning orgs need it on for list email tracking.
- The recipient is an email address only, with no related lead, contact or person account.
- The email body is blank.
- The recipient's mail app blocks images, so the tracking pixel does not load.
- The recipient opted out of tracking, and your org honors email privacy preferences.
What an open in Salesforce really means
An open is a tiny image loading. Salesforce calls this imprecise, and it is.
- False opens: security scanners and mail privacy features load images before a person does.
- Missed opens: people who block images read the email and count as unopened.
- No clear link detail: list email tracking is not built for per-link click reports.
Treat list email opens as a rough signal for a send, not as proof a person read it.

What Salesforce list email does well
- One-off sends from a list view or campaign, without another tool.
- Templates with merge fields from the record.
- A shared, verified From address for the team.
- Leads and contacts marked Email Opt Out left out of the send.
For event invites, announcements and team outreach, that is enough. See our bulk email guide for the setup.
When to move to an email platform
- You want a contact's opens and clicks on their record, not in a separate report.
- You want automations that react to an open or a click.
- You need link-level clicks and campaign reports.
- You send more than the daily limit of 5,000 external recipients per org.
We connect ActiveCampaign to Salesforce: lists that follow Salesforce fields, and unsubscribes that update the Salesforce record.
Email tracking in healthcare
If you email patients, the content and the tracking data both need care. Keep diagnosis and treatment details out of bulk email, and check that any email platform holding patient data will sign a BAA. We sign BAAs for healthcare work, and we can help you set up the sending side and the Salesforce side to match.
